Not Very Normal

Alright, so I am still a little confused about this book but I will try my best to write something good about this topic.  From my understanding Genly Ai is not like the Gethenian people.  He is from a different planet (maybe earth?) where everyone has one gender their whole life (with a few exceptions).  Whereas on planet Winter, the Gethenian people have no gender except for the time of kemmering where they are given a gender long enough to have a baby and then go back to being genderless.  Of course to both types of people the others situation is very odd.  Think about it.  It is like you growing up one way in your house hold and then you go to a friend’s house and they do things completely different.  Obviously to you it is going to be a little weird because you are not used to things being done that way but to your friend it is completely normal.  To them the things you do in your household may seem strange in their mind and out of the ordinary.  It is difficult for Genly Ai to understand this simply because where he is from having no gender is not considered “normal”.  I think his attitudes reveal that the world he comes from is very closed minded and not well cultured. But who is to say that is his fault?  I think that no matter where you are from you are always only going to know what is in your everyday life, or what is considered to be “normal”.  I may be completely wrong with answering this question but this is just my interpretation of the situation.

  1. I find that you bring in how his world is not very close minded interesting, and I partly agree with it. Genly adapting to the new planet would've definitely been awkward and weird for anyone. Any one of us would be freaked out by what the Gethenian people do. Genly also seems to adapt fairly quickly with such a drastic change in the book. He got used to the Gethenians and doesn't seem to be in awe when he sees them anymore; additionally, there were tons to adapt to. The people, kemmering, their religion, their days/months, and life-style.
