I feel like I'm the only one in the class that sees "Trolls" differently

My life has literally revolved around the internet. Basically I’m on it whenever I can and it’s sadly way too big a part of my life. Whenever I’m free I run to my computer, and just another normal day begins. I understand the fact that “trolls” just roam and own the internet now, but I’ve developed such a thick skin for this type of thing. If you play any online games or use internet forums or websites like Reddit, 9gag, or 4Chan then it’s kind of forced to deal with trolls. Now trolls are literally a part of my life. I can’t imagine one day without them, and I could hardly care what they say. Usually I find it entertaining; however, trolls CAN go too far. I don’t think all trolls are bad or have bad intentions, but there aren’t many that go that far.

I believe some people should be punished because it’s blatantly wrong what they say over the internet; however, I believe that they’re unaware of their audience. Everyone is behind a screen and they don’t know what the other person is going through, but once you’re on the internet for a while, you’ve seen it all. I will admit to trolling at times for comedy, but not all trolls put someone else down for trolling. Maybe I have a definition that is different from everyone else, but I can’t imagine an internet without trolls. I’ve basically accept that trolls belong on the internet. I understand everyone should be treated nicely and not everyone can take these type of ignorance, but the internet is basically filled with trolls. It’s basically impossible to be on it for hours doing what you want peacefully online.

Currently, ANYTHING is considered trolling (on the internet) as long as it’s not the straight forward answer people look for. I do think trolling has gone too far at some points, however, sometimes you can sit back and laugh a little. The idea that all “trolls” are just out there to ruin your day and have negative intentions is quite absurd in my opinion.

What are your thoughts on trolling?

  1. During class I have always thought about how not all trolls are bad. The trolls I remember are the ones that make people laugh, not at the person that posted but at how dumb the comment is. There are those people who are trolls that take it to the extreme. Some of those people need to take a chill pill of how mean the comments get.

  2. I agree completely... I think people can't differentiate between trolling and cyber bullying. It feels like anyone who is anonymous and mean is considered a troll, and it really depends on the definition of a troll, I think.
If the definition of a troll suggests they're annoying but harmless, then the crazy stories we heard about in Lindy West's life are bullies who think they're trolls. If the definition suggests it's anyone who is anonymous and likes to poke fun, trolling would include a very wide variety of people. If that's the case, it's wrong to clump the harsh with the harmless and consider all trolls internet criminals.
But I still feel as if any kind of trolling is at least a little negative, I've seen 'harmless' trolls do their thing before, and I've been very glad I wasn't their subject of interest, because I wouldn't want to not be taken seriously and be embarrassed by a post or comment. Any trolling is detrimental to my well-being, even in just for a small moment.
I wish there were no trolls at all, but there are, so I guess I'll stick up for the decent ones when being compared to the vulgar.
