In the article “What Happened When I confronted My Cruellest Troll” by Lindy West I couldn't help but wonder is it really worth it? Lindy is a blogger who expresses her opinion online about issues that concern her and she feels need to be addressed in today's society and I respect her for that. But I don't think your job is worth it when “Being harassed on the internet is such a normal…” that's a load of crap. No one should have to take being insulted on a daily basis and brush it off so casually ,that's extremely unhealthy in my opinion. She should seriously considered an alternative method of giving her opinion online in which comments are not allowed ,or clear identification of the commentor is required so they have to own up about what they say. I just don't think a person can remain mentally stable when you have so much hate aimed at you and you have no way to fight off the salvo of hateful comments. Bloggers like her and others are placed in dangerous situations especially when links from their blog can lead back to personal social media applications and “phone numbers and addresses are published…” ,and that's why I respect Lindy West’s and other bloggers decisions to continue blogging despite these dangerous trolls but I also fear for them and wonder if it's worth it?
I believe that there are no ways to stop trolling on the internet. And Bloggers usually like their job because she wants to express what she thinks and hope she has an impact on the world. She does it to influence the few people who she influences. I believe that it is worth it because she seems to enjoy her job; additionally, I PERSONALLY believe that trolls aren't going to be silenced anytime soon (or ever) and her experience in that article is a way for her to endure it while she continues her blogging. Additionally, I think there are TONS of trolls out there, but their intentions are different. Not all trolls intentions are to outright harm someone emotionally.
ReplyDeleteLindy west's job is blogger, and she posts very controversial subjects. So no matter what she will receive still receive some crazy trolls posting on it. I don't think restricting comments on her post is the answer because I think the point of a blogger is to share your opinion and to see the opinions of the people. I do think that making the accounts have some form of identification is a way to solve it, but people will still be trolls no matter what they won't go t0o the extremes as much but they still gonna troll. No matter what there will still be trolls as long as the internet exists and we have freedom.
ReplyDeleteIn allowing our thoughts -- or information in general -- to be curtailed by our fear of being attacked by others, we are effectively shouted into silence. In my opinion, the fight that reporters and journalists fight in their fight to publish truth is a necessary one in democratic society. Yes -- the comments they receive are incredibly insensitive, but the importance of the facilitation of truth and knowledge -- the underlying concept of journalism -- outweighs the ignorance that creeps beneath it.
