Fast Food Addiction
Unfortunately, fast food and junk food are addictive. Either I or my mom makes dinner during the weekdays and my grandpa likes to barbeque on the weekends. We don't eat out much, but we also don't really attempt to avoid genetically modified foods. My mom gets food stamps and since we have a big family, she buys whatever is cheapest. Organic foods are more expensive and she doesn't feel it's necessary to spend more money and end up with less. However, when I'm at my dad's all we do is eat out because he doesn't cook and he doesn't buy groceries. Now that I have all this knowledge about the food industry I've become a bit disgusted on what goes on behind the scenes for companies like McDonald's and other fast food restaurants. Now when I receive my food I tend to question it a little bit. Questions like "What's actually in this?" The images from Food Inc. haunt my mind with the mistreatment of the animals and the factory conditions. When you think about it, the way our food is produced is actually disgusting. The main problem though is the fact that fast food tastes so good. It's like a drug. Eating out has become a bad habit which can be broken, but habits are hard to break. The food industry holds so much power over us because we need food to survive and the healthier foods take more money out of our pockets. I know that I probably should try to avoid eating fast food, but sometimes it seems unavoidable. There are days when my mom really can't make food for dinner because of everyone's clashing schedules. Organic food may be healthier, but when you have 8 people to feed you're going to buy whatever is going to feed everyone for the lowest price. Unfortunately, organic foods are going to be kicked to the curb because it's just too expensive.

Junk food has always been a problem for me simply because it's easy to purchase and it tastes good. But in some cases, fast food is basically the only option some people may have. A couple of weeks ago, I watched a video in government about current world issues. The topic of food came up and there was a family being interviewed that was currently in a similar situation. Driving away from a fast food restaurant, a mother had just bought her family hamburgers that were obviously unhealthy. She had proclaimed that she knew the consequences of what she was feeding her children. However, those meals were all that she could afford. Statements like "healthy foods are more expensive" were announced as well in this video. Sadly, this is an important issue that needs to be resolved.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy that you mention how healthy food is expensive. Well, to me it is, because in freshmen year, in Health, we had to write papers on the video SuperSize Me (or something along those lines) and that was one of my points. People turn to unhealthy fast food so quick because its cheaper than the healier options. At McDonald's, you can get a double cheeseburger for $1.99 and their salads are almost $7 (This comment is kinda sad because I asked my dad about the cheeseburger and he told me the price without having to look it up).

DeleteFast food and junk food is so accessible and easy to get no matter what condition you live in. I also think that fast food and junk food is associated with family time because I've noticed food ads mainly consist of family gathering like BBQs etc. Even though there are some commercials promoting healthy foods, *I* don't know of any families that would put healthy food or organic food before junk food.
