Reality

4 years ago I did not care what was going into my body. Last year I did not care what was going into my body. And, quite frankly, this year I still do not care what was going into my body... Well, I guess I care a bit more now since I've gotten older, matured and have been more informed, but my point is that even after watching documentaries and discussing the food industry and health with my peers, my eating habits haven't shifted even a bit. Maybe saying that "I don't care" is the wrong choice of words. It's more like I'm aware and know that change won't happen.
I've always loved junk food. Always. When I say my eating habits are bad, I mean they are BAD. Skipping breakfast every day, snacking on chips and candy throughout the day, ending my day with fast food, drinking soda EVERY SINGLE DAY, etc. etc. etc. And even watching Food Inc. as a freshman, there was no change to my diet. I see all these posts about how we could just change our diets by having alternative choices for snacks and really looking in to what we are in taking, but in all reality, I see it as kind of impossible right now.
We live in a world that's always on the move. Especially for kids with busy schedules going from classes to club meetings to practices, and we see cheap and fast food as the best choice.
All throughout high school, I have been involved in sports, Mariners, and AP/honors classes, and in between all practices, rehearsals, races, shows, and meetings I've turned to fast food and junk food because it was "down the street and I only had 15 minutes till I had to be back." My mom works and goes to school so sometimes I suffice to fast food because I don't have time to make anything because I have homework to do at 8:00 after rehearsal. This is obviously a personal problem and it may not fit everybody's situation, but I know a lot of us can relate to not having enough time or money.
I'm not saying that it is impossible for anybody to change their habits, because others have more time money or just plain old self control, but as a whole - food company's, restaurants, the world - it's gonna take a long time to see some type of reality check.
If I could go back 4 years, I would definitely want to change my eating habits, but I know it probably wouldn't have happened.

  1. There is no argument that fast food and junk food are cheap and fast as they are terrible. As a choice, no one should really WANT to prefer it over a healthy, fulfilling meal. However, your post really stuck out to me because its so honest. I'm glad to see someone talking about real life situations that prevent people from accessing healthy foods. It has REALLY bugged me to see people on here shaming those who don't eat healthily after POF, especially when not everyone has chances at choosing what they want for themselves. Not everyone is privileged with the time or money.

  2. To be honest, this post opens me to an idea that I did not think of in a long time. After watching and reading tons of articles, presentations, documentaries that talk about the effects of bad foods and how we need to change it, it is really easy to remove myself from the reality. As someone who have a lot of free time to waste, it is really easy to just sit behind the comfort of my computers and judge all of the people who say that they did not want to or can not change their habits. But if we are to look at someone's life, we need to consider their external influence and look through their perspective. Like you said, many people have other things in life, that are more important to them than foods, that they need to worry about. Most people simply do not have the time or financial ability to eat healthy every meal. It's kind of messed up, to be honest. Food is one of the most influential things human have in human's life, yet the ones that are available to most people are often bad while the ones that are good are locked behind time and money issue. And the things that we proposed to be the solution to the problem tend to be related to the original issue too. "Eat healthier", "stop supporting companies like Monsanto", "grow your own food", it's like the people saying this have not considered that we would if we could, it just that we do not have time, money, or power to do it. I feel like something needs to happened to change this, and soon, before this horrible system become the staple of our life.
