Approach of Anonymity
Obviously we are all trying to figure whether anonymity is a right or if invites harassment and bullying. The way I see it, it can be a bit of both. It all just depends on how we approach it. I'm pretty sure there are some of us that don't like to be anonymous about things while others think its necessary. I believe it all just depends how we use anonymity. I certainly believe that anonymity is a right for a lot people especially really emotional people that don't like to keep things in but don't want to let them out publically so they have the option of letting people know with letting the readers know who is revealing their insides. Being honest, this problem of harassment anonymously will really never be solved because there is always someone out there that has something to say whether its right or wrong. I would just say to be careful about what you say on social media or just online in general. I would also let people know to not even comment literally on a negative anonymous post because that's exactly what they want. I also believe that everyone has the right to know who they are talking to so you know how to respond to that individual because everyone is different. All in all, anonymity is inviting harassment because there is a lot of things that can go wrong with someone you don't know and even bad decisions can be made which happens all the time and can result in people getting bullied and in extreme cases killed. There should be very little anonymity on the internet, period.

"There should be very little anonymity on the internet, period." Just out of curiosity, do you honestly think this? The reason I want to know because from what I seen from your post, your opinion seem to suggest otherwise. Anyway, I can certainly see the benefit of getting rid of anonymity online almost completely, I think there will be several negative consequence out of this.
ReplyDeleteFirst, how do you propose we do this? Do we just start requiring people to send their social securities number before making an account? I mean, without something like social securities it would be impossible to identify a person weather or not they are real, and thus not really getting rid of anonymity.
Secondly, there are many people who absolutely need anonymity online. People can used those as a place to express their opinion freely without repercussion. A good example of this is, as pointed out by Hayden's post, when someone is "in a country that has hardcore censorship, you won't be able to speak out if it isn't anonymous." As someone who used to live in a country where Lese Majeste law is literally part of the constitution, you have no idea how true this statement is.
Thirdly, many places would improve by having full anonymity of the users. Many people who have reputation to protect or are simply too shy to express their opinion choose to refrain from commenting in many communities. Without anonymity these people would never contribute much to the discussions, and who know, maybe they have something interesting to say, but can't. We might be missing many good things from different people if we choose to getting rid of anonymity online.
