The Importance of Anonymity

Anonymity is important in today’s society because many individuals seek for ways to speak their mind freely. Having anonymity is when a person hides their identity behind a screen and say things that they wouldn’t normally say in person. Having anonymity is a good thing because it can allow a person to have power over an issue that they have strong feelings about. Individuals use this so that not only will they feel free but still have their sense of privacy. It gives an individual the confidence to express who they truly are without being harassed by someone else. Many people may argue and say that this shouldn’t be allowed online because it creates a new path for trolling. Unfortunately there are those few people that abuse this right. This leads to cyber bullying, also known as trolling. The way I see it is that having anonymity helps a person communicate with others when they are too shy or afraid to say it in person.

  1. I agree that anonymity is a good thing and that some people (trolls) ruin it for everyone else. Personally, I like anonymity because I'm a shy person to. I also agree about what you said about anonymity helping people communicate with others.

  2. You make good points. Its almost impossible to end trolling and harassment without launching a censorship. Anonymity brings good along with bad, we just need to learn how to deal with it and shame it appropriately so that people realize it is actually a bad thing! Trolling is inevitable in an internet environment like ours..
