Block Me

I don't have much to say about anonymity anymore. I would definitely consider any means of filtering out all the junk to make room for the good when it comes to anonymity in specific websites or apps, but I don't know enough about the guts of the Internet to even know where to begin.

But that's just it for me- I feel like those who are most affected by cyber harassment or who take the most interest in the human and moral elements of the web don't know enough about it. We don't know how to make things disappear ourselves. There's a variety of features for security and privacy on every site that permits online interaction that we just don't know about. Most people don't know they can filter out their un-unfriendable family member's inappropriate content from their feed on Facebook by clicking "unfollow". They can be completely oblivious to the fact that they can call their cellphone carrier and block all numbers except for a select few that they know they need. There are features most people are unaware of much more complicated than these- features that can likely solve a good amount of their cyber harassment issues. I don't know how to go into my computer and trace the names of pseudonymous users. I don't know how my computer really works, and I feel that if I did, I would somehow be making things easier for myself.

Being tech-savvy is something that we need, anyway, in order to shove the extreme trolls and hate commentators away. If I know my computer inside and out, I still may not be good enough to filter out negativity. That's when someone else more tech-y and generally creative than I am comes in with new privacy plans for web users. We need to really know our means for communication to be capable users. We just do. There's someone out there who hasn't even blocked their first troll yet because they simply don't know how.
