There are many issues involving our food system. This includes problems like not knowing what in contained in the food we eat. What is in our meals leads back to who processes our food, so of course the workers should be taken into consideration. This article discusses how food industry workers are poorly treated despite the maximum amount of work they do. Researchers found that employees at places such as farms and slaughterhouses are responsible for producing an annual amount of $1.8 trillion in goods and services and more that 13% of gross domestic product. Yet, their working conditions do not meet their substantial needs. Studies show that more than half have picked, processed, sold, cooked, or served food while being sick. Issues like these not only affect the workers but also consumers like ourselves. The food they process is the food we eat. If employees are not provided with good working conditions, there needs to be a change.

ReplyDeleteI agree that if the farmers need to be treated well, and that their working conditions need to meet their requirements. They are the foundation to where we receive our foods. If our foods are coming from workers that are unhealthy and constantly sick due to their working conditions, their needs to be a change. On top of that it's not fair to the workers that are putting all of their time and effort into helping pick, process, sell, serve, and getting nothing out of it other than getting sick. In order to move on from this there needs to be a change in how the farmers are working in order to start a healthy environment between the workers and the consumers.
ReplyDeleteI agree that farmers and employees at slaughterhouses need better working conditions. They barely get paid and for most of them, this is the only income they live off of and support their families. Also, their working conditions are terrible. If they had better working conditions, I'm sure production rates would increase. Food industry companies should treat their employees better because they don't deserve the treatment they are getting now.
ReplyDeleteThe problem of mistreated workers goes far beyond just the food industry. We can find some degree corporate and industrial abuse and working-class injustice is just about any field we look into. If we are to solve the problems in the workforce in the food industry, it would require approaching the entire concept of what an employee has rights to and what an employer must provide.
