The Government Trying to Stop Food Labels?????

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/25/opinion/a-bad-effort-in-congress-to-thwart-states-on-food-labels.html

In this article, it talks about how the Congress has tried to pass a bill to stop states from requiring food labels of genetically modified on their products. This is questionable to me because the government should be allowing instead of fighting this so that consumers know what's in their food. Isn't that what the FDA and the government should be doing for consumers. It says that they are trying to fight this to protect the food industries but shouldn't the government's main objective be to help us not the food industry? This article is interesting to me because after watching the Food Inc. movie and talking about how the government should be helping us, but the article gives us proof that it's the exact opposite. They are protecting the rich food industries instead of the consumers.

  1. I agree with you, the government should help the consumers. The majority of the world is allergic to many different foods. I believe that if food companies took off their food labels then less people will buy from them because what is in the food is questionable. There might be an ingredient in there that could kill someone. Why do the food industries need to be protected? They shouldn't be selling food that is going to harm people...

  2. You're right, the thing is we are more than consumers, we are citizens of the most powerful country in the world and it is a shame that the government isn't doing more for its people. 64 countries have already set requirements for gmo food labeling... USA needs to catch up! It saddens me that the gov is interested in protecting giant corps who create artificially manipulated foods and fight to lie about it rather than just selling the truth to the public.

  4. I agree with the things you said. The government have always been trying to protects the food industries for quite a few decades now, and it is working.

The problem with the food labels is a serious concern that absolutely need fixing. If the companies do not have anything to hide, why would they not want to put the ingredient that they are trying to sell to us. While the argument that "people would get scare and not buy the items if they see the labels" is a fairly solid argument, they should still keep the labels. I think that people should be allow to know the positives and negatives side to what they are consuming right now.

The problem go even further when the companies do put in the label, but they are trying to get around it. Most companies choose to put in more complicated, sciencey name rather than the most commonly name ingredient. For example, how many of you would recognize that C12H22O11 or sucrose is the name for table sugar that could potentially cause diabetes if consume in big amount? Maybe you recognized it because chemistry and biology class still fresh in your mind, but if we were to put this on a label, a lot of people would not recognize it.
