A few days ago in class, Ms. Fletcher told me about a variation of crop rotation using the Three Sisters – winter squash, beans, corns. Instead of pumping the soil full of chemicals to replenish the soil's nutrients, farmers could use the Three Sisters method which would not only save money due to chemicals no longer being needed but also provide a wider variety of crops.
Not only would corn, a mass-produced crop per bushel in the United States, be produced, we would also have an increase of beans and winter squash which adds variation to our diet and menus. The surplus of corn was already mentioned in Food Inc., so maybe instead of just producing corn by flooding the ground with chemicals, we could produce two more crops for the market without the potential danger of lethal chemicals.
Personally, I don't consider too much whether or not crops are grown organically. It just isn't much of a concern to me as it is to other people; however, what I do feel is wrong is the environment being so harmed by a process that could be sustainable and virtually painless to our planet and its ecosystems.
Do you think that this would be a practical approach to move away from chemicals in our farming? Why or why not?
