While looking at Ted Talks to help me with finding a
research topic, I found this video of a kid who is an organic farmer himself.
Birke Baehr, who was 11 at the time of this, was already a better public
speaker and knows more about our food industry than many of us. In his Ted
Talks he talks about how like any other kid, he was easily influenced to buy
certain foods from the colorful packaging to the toys that some offer. Until he
realized that not all pigs and cows are raised on grass-fed farms and he became
more concerned with how they are actually raised and the GMOs in our food. He
then gave up his dream of being a professional NFL player and decided to become
an organic farmer. He has since met with multiple organic farmers, like Joel
Salatin who we saw in Food Inc., and has learned more about organic
farming. Baehr then brings up a good point of how people are unwilling to pay
high prices for food, yet they end up paying the high cost of medical bills
once they get sick from eating unhealthy food. This lead to me think about how
much we spend on fast food and other junk food that are cheap, but eventually
we eat so much of it, it will just equal the cost of organic foods that are
healthier for us. So in the long run, I believe that it’s better to pay for
organic foods and live a healthy life now, instead of buying cheap unhealthy
foods that I will have to back later with my medical bills from an unhealthy
lifestyle.

ReplyDeleteI Enjoyed this kid's energy. He Kept it short and simple but didn't really touch on the policies for food which is a main focus in this research paper. Although he did mention the importance of organic farming along with lifestyle choices, I still feel as if this source is unreliable and only raises the questions that we have already answered through class discussions.
