Promoting Healthier Food Choices at School

After gaining a bit of insight on the conditions of school nutrition programs, I've come to find out that it comes down to an overall financial health issue. Results have been evident over the passed few years that very few schools rate their food programs on an "outstanding" scale; Yet, there are so many programs, initiatives and districts that continue to push forward with this idea of promoting healthier food choices at school. I believe teaching students about the initiatives is more effective than creating these programs with aspirations that don't implement change but sell the public an idea for the look. Teaching students about real nutritional facts, smarter lunchroom habits, and having options may give us the desire to actually promote better food choices at school, rather than just selling the people an idea of promoting change without putting in the footwork. We have a hard time eating school food because it looks, smells and tastes unappealing. Deep down we know that school food is really just as harmful as all the other crap we eat, so changing the entire way we go about choosing what we consume can help mold the way the school nutrition programs choose the way the deliver the food. Although, federal standards will continue to harm the overall financial health of the food programs, the solution can be found with those who actually eat the damn food, compared to those who just supply it to us. Us informed individuals need to be the suppliers and consumers so that we can promote healthier food choices at schools without making it such a financial and federal problem. I feel like using this topic to expand on in my research paper could lead to a dead end but also lead into other aspects of food choices and programs that we could impose some sort of change on.

  1. I agree even with these nutrion program initiatives obesity rates have not changed in the US ,their system clearly isn't working. I agree with you and believe schools should stick to what they are best at ,educating. Forcing us to eat the unappealing food that really is crap is not helping us. Schools should focus on getting the message across and not just leading us blindly.
